The Small Things

December 29th, 2006 by My Lost Shadow

It’s amazing how small things can make a big difference in the course of events.

My first example is the influence the shape of the continents had on human evolution. Eurasia (Europe and Asia) is more of a wide land than America (both North and South); despite this the maximum size (be it widht or hight) is about 13.000KM. Think now that in America writing has been developed around 1500AD by the Aztecs and they were the only civilization in America to reach this achievement; despite the fact that a neighboring civilization had writing none of the others (Maya, Inca) adopted the writing; in Eurasia it was precisely opposite: writing was developed by the Sumerian’s around 3500BC and was adopted and adapted by all the civilizations in Eurasia relatively quick.

The reason for which these things are completely opposite is the shape of the continents. Because Eurasia is more wide than high people could migrate easier due to the fact that the climate was mostly the same and that the day had the same length, and along with the people came the ideas and knowledge they possessed. In America it is the exact opposite: because the continent’s height is larger than it’s width the migration of people was harder to achieve because there were a lot of different climates (subarctic, arid, etc.) and the length of the day varied; this meant that the exchange of ideas took longer than in Eurasia, fact determined by the small number of migrations that took place in America.

The second example is a simple one: think of what you feel when you see a leaf fall from a tree or a snowflake melt; see, it changed your mood.

Political Correctness?

December 19th, 2006 by My Lost Shadow

I’m sick and tired of political correctness. I discriminate! Read the following two stories and decide for yourself if that concept makes any sense.

But first of all I have to make some statements: please take note that womyn is not a typo. It’s the wish of the feminists that this new word meaning women shouldn’t contain the word men and that all the crossed out words in the second text don’t belong in a politically correct world (the alternative word is next to them).

The texts belong to James Finn Garner and he is the sole owner of the materials depicted bellow as far as I know. Read the rest of this entry »

Eu

December 17th, 2006 by My Lost Shadow
Vad oameni ce stau in picioare
Vad pasari ce fug catre-apus
Vad ingeri ce cad in pacate
Vad demoni ce viata aduc.

Visez la izvoare de munte
Visez la paduri de cristal
Visez la un nume anume
Visez la un inger real.

Traiesc intr-o lume ciumata
Traiesc ca sa spun ca nu mor
Traiesc cu un suflet de gheata
Traiesc o persoana s-ador.

Atunci cand nimicul e-aproape
Si lumea e-un mare pustiu,
Cand strada e goala in noapte…
Nicicand visator pot sa fiu.

Cand frunzele-nvata sa zboare
Si luna pluteste prin nori
Cand versul se-aude in soapte
Atunci nu mai poti ca sa mori!

Censorship

December 14th, 2006 by My Lost Shadow

It all started some time ago when I published an article entitled “Should we censure?” (It is written in Romanian). I was talking there about the fact that, given the ability to hide under anonymity a lot of people “exploit” the bloging phenomenon and turn it into a way to swear, talk trash and propagate no culture at all.

In my opinion blogs represent the new media, and this means that they must have some value of forming opinion, even if that opinion is very shallow. I talked about censoring blogs that have a content that can’t bring anything good except help the writer express all his thoughts. I talked about censoring on the level of tagging blogs and rating them in a similar way video games are rated so that the normal Internet user, or an user who is in search for some “premium content” can see the warning page prior to entering the blog, a page that states that the blog has nothing interesting on it.

Darius took one step further and wrote and article on his personal blog entitled “Censorship” in which he talks about self censorship. He states that you can’t just go ahead and tell someone what your real opinion is about him, especially if it is a bad one, because of the consequences. Imagine telling your boss that he is a complete idiot; wouldn’t you get fired the next day?

Same goes for bloggers that are read by their employers or people that outrank them. You can’t write anything you want because of the fear that you will have to suffer the consequences of your thoughts. This now leads to the concept of democracy which states that the liberty of opinion can’t be taken away: but you see, even if you have this law that grants you the freedom of speech, you still can’t say anything you like, sometimes even if it is constructive criticism. This takes me over to the dark side and a little voice whispers in my ear “Democracy is just a form of totalitarian government in which censorship is self-imposed and thus it is a more viable form than let’s say communism”.

I think that the saddest thing related to this subject is a person hiding his feeling from the ones he loves. This I guess is the form of self censorship which causes the most harm in human relations because if you can’t be true to the one you love, how can you be open to a complete stranger? Ponder about this…

Ceata iernii

December 12th, 2006 by My Lost Shadow

A small poem in Romanian. Not very special but I think it’s worth being posted. It was written during a math class some days ago.

In search…

December 10th, 2006 by My Lost Shadow

… of the perfect rhyme. Still struggling to find the end to this poem; any suggestions are welcomed.

Blood drops falling on the floor,
Winds that bring the fire lore
Angels dying; times no more…

Shallow waters, shallow lives
People lying, childish cries
Lifeless bodies, moonless skies…

Darkened city, storm of souls
Place of chaos, chilling roar
